Obituary of Evelyn "Chevy" Matus

ST. JOHNSVILLE – Evelyn “Chevy” Matus was born on July 23, 1923, in Johnstown, NY, to Nicholas Ouderkirk and Dorothy Van Horne Ouderkirk. The family moved to St. Johnsville when she was 16 and Evelyn lived in the same house until her passing, on Tuesday morning, August 16, 2022, something that was very special to her. On January 21, 1950, Evelyn was united in marriage to Edward “Edjo” Matus, a union they enjoyed until his passing in 2002. Evelyn is survived by her daughters, Michal Ann Rizzo and husband, Joseph Rizzo, of Oneonta and Patricia Meyers, of Utica. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Joseph Rizzo, Nicola Rizzo and Roy Meyers; and her great-granddaughter, Sophia Meyers, who gave her great joy in her final years. Evelyn also leaves her sister, Barbara Melnick Murray; and several special nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Larry Ouderkirk; and sisters, Marilyn Przydatek and Shirley Ouderkirk. Evelyn was a graduate of St. Johnsville Central School. She was employed for several years as an inspector, at Helmont Mills. Evelyn enjoyed meeting her friends at the Hungry Bear restaurant and the gym at the St. Johnsville Nursing Home and she loved meeting her family at the Turning Stone Casino. The family wishes to thank John, Rich, Carrie and Mike, Evelyn’s Helmont Mills “family,” Cookie, for going out of her way every week, David Miosek and neighbors, Jaime and Missy Carter for always being there for her and treating her like family. A special thank you to Lynn Mocko and Robin Clark for the care given to Evelyn the past three months so that she was able to stay in her home. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations in her memory to either the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or to H.A.L.O.
